France Flag

What do we call the French flag?

The tricolore is the national flag of France. Known to English speakers as theFrench tricolour (UK) or tricolor (US), it features three vertical bands coloured blue (hoist side), white, and red.

When did France become a country?

The Francia  is believed to have started in 486. Then in August 843 the empire was divided between Louis’ three sons, with East Francia going to Louis the German, Middle Francia to Lothair I, and West Francia to Charles the Bald. West Francia approximated the area occupied by, and was the precursor, to modern France.

Interesting Facts about the French Flag

  • From 1814-1830 the French flag was just plain white, the purest flag of all.
  • The French flag has uneven proportions in naval use. The blue, white, and red sections are 30%, 33%, and 37%, respectively, to counteract the illusion of size mismatch created when the flag is flapping (flapping makes the section opposite the halyard, the red section in this case, seem smaller)
